What Is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is software that can plan a sequence of steps and take actions across systems to reach a goal — such as researching a topic, drafting a response and sending it — rather than just answering a single question.

How is this different from a chatbot?

A chatbot responds to a message with a message. An agent can decide what steps are needed, call tools or APIs to carry them out, and keep going until the goal is reached or it needs human input.

What can an AI agent actually do for a business?

Common examples include qualifying and following up leads, researching a topic and compiling notes, routing and escalating support tickets, and handling multi-step admin tasks like invoice processing.

Are AI agents reliable enough for real use?

For well-defined, bounded tasks with clear guardrails and human handoff points for ambiguous cases, yes. Fully autonomous agents making high-stakes decisions with no oversight are not yet standard practice.
